What are crowns?
Crowns are tooth-shaped caps made of metal or porcelain that fit directly over the top of your natural tooth. Crowns are the perfect fix for a tooth that’s been opened because of root canal treatment or has been so badly cracked or broken that it can’t be repaired with a filling alone.
Treating your broken or damaged tooth with a crown lets you keep your original tooth and its roots to maintain your oral health and your smile.
What are same-day crowns?
At Cottage Dental, you don’t have to go through a series of appointments to get a custom-designed crown, nor do you have to wear a temporary crown while your permanent crown is being made in a lab.
Instead, the office has a 3D computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) printing system, which allows your dentist to fit, print, and cement your permanent crown in place in just a couple of hours.
You don’t even need a follow-up appointment with a same-day crown.
Why do I need a crown?
If your tooth is badly damaged or cracked, a crown lets you keep the tooth by strengthening it with a porcelain cover. The crown is matched to the shade of your other teeth and modeled so that it mimics your own natural chewing surfaces.
Getting a crown may be the only way to preserve your tooth and keep your other teeth in healthy alignment. You can also use crowns to improve the appearance of a tooth or teeth. Crowns fix the look of misshapen or badly stained teeth.
How do same-day crowns work?
Your dentist takes digital impressions of your teeth and gums — including the tooth that needs a crown — and sends the information to the CAD/CAM system. A 3D printer then prints a crown in the right shade, shape, and chewing surface to match your natural teeth.
Your dentist covers your damaged tooth with the instant crown. Once they’re sure the fit is 100% perfect and comfortable, they cement the crown in place. The entire process takes only about two hours, compared with the weeks it takes to get traditional crowns.
How long do same-day crowns last?
Same-day crowns last just as long as traditional ceramic crowns. You may need to replace your crown every 10 years or so.
